A lot of people have heard that networking is an essential practice that will make an impact on their careers. What you need to understand is that when you are being faced with job loss, forced or desired career change, networking is probably going to be the most important strategy that you will need to understand and implement. There are three areas of your life that you can use networking in to help you achieve your career goals. You need to get started right now making visits to the locations where professionals meet and network. If you are fortunate enough to still be employed, you might be able to find the time to do it at your employers expense.

Before we get into the three areas where networking can help you I want to talk briefly about networking while unemployed. Networking while not employed is probably the most difficult thing to do. While unemployed you may have feelings of isolation from your peers and the industry at large. You may want to seek out networking groups that are primarily geared for the unemployed in your industry. Make it a habit to go to events and places where you can meet people who are able to help you get a foot in the door of a good company or introduce you to a hiring manager.

Career Coaches

Many people like to have someone who can motivate and guide them during the process of a career change, and thus end up hiring a career coach. Career coaches can be especially helpful if you have always been an employee, and have never really taken control of your life. Career coaches are invaluable at helping you to adjust your mindset and project an air of supreme confidence in your abilities. Career coaches are excellent sources for networking because they will typically have many contacts in a broad cross section of industries.

Education

In today’s job market it is not unrealistic to find that you will need additional training and education to fulfill your dreams. There are a multitude of choices for continuing and secondary education available today. There are all types of educational institutions that are available to meet your needs based on affordability, time, and convenience. School can be a good place to network. You’ll find many of your peers taking classes to further their careers there too. Most of them will still be working in some capacity and maybe able to help you. You’ll also find that you will be able to network with your instructors too. Instructors are often working or consulting with companies in your area and can be very helpful in your job search. Also, don’t forget about the job placement resources at your school. Remember that its a win-win when a school’s students find employment.

Recruiters

If you are currently employed it can be dangerous to post your resume in public. You may want to consider hiring a recruiter to work on your behalf. A recruiter who is working for you personally can be discreet in shopping around your resume, and keep your current employer from finding out that you are looking for a change in employment. Recruiters are a great way to network. They have lots of inside knowledge about job openings in your area.
