After surgery you may be forced to limit the twisting and bending motion of your spine. This is done many times to assist in the healing process because, sometimes, excessive motion of the spine. And a good way to assist in the limiting of the motion is with a back support brace.

This type of brace is also recommended in many cases following a whiplash type of injury and also in some work related types of injuries.

The use of a back support brace is not, however, limited to being used after surgery or injury. They work really well in helping to prevent injuries too. Go into any big box store and you will see the employees wearing these types of braces. They help limit the motion of the spine and just the fact that you are wearing one, will help remind you to use proper lifting techniques.

There are generally two types of back support braces available. One type laces up kind of like a corset. These are great because the user can kind of adjust the amount of support by lacing the brace tighter in certain areas. That adjustability is also a reason for concern too because the improper lacing of the brace can lead to not enough support too.

The second type is the simpler, and more popular, elastic support. These are the ones you see most often used in places like Lowes and Home Depot. They are adjustable using hook and loop fasteners (Velcro type) and the support is not adjustable. Only the size can be adjusted.
